Atlanta appliance repair with a real diagnosis first
Atlanta Ice Maker Repair, From the Water Line to the Bin
An empty ice bin in an Atlanta July is more than an inconvenience. Ice makers are small machines with a lot going on — water valves, heaters, sensors, motors and sometimes a pump — and when one piece stops, the ice stops with it. Alex Appliances Repair diagnoses the whole system, from the water line in the wall to the cube in your glass, and fixes the part that actually failed.

Ice Maker Problems We Fix Every Week
No ice at all. The ice maker may not be getting water, the mold may not be cold enough to freeze, or the module that runs the cycle may have failed. A shutoff arm or sensor stuck in the "full" position is another frequent cause.
Small, hollow or crescent-shaped cubes. That points to too little water reaching the mold — a clogged filter, a weak inlet valve or low household water pressure.
Ice clumps or a solid block in the bin. Ice partly melts and refreezes when the freezer temperature swings or when the bin sits unused for a long time. In door ice makers it can also mean warm air leaking into the ice compartment.
Water leaking into the freezer or onto the floor. An overfill from a valve that does not close completely, a cracked fill tube or a loose connection behind the refrigerator.
Ice that tastes or smells bad. Old ice absorbs odors from food. An overdue water filter or a dirty bin adds to it.
The dispenser will not release ice. A jammed auger, a burned-out auger motor, a stuck door flap or a faulty dispenser switch.
Clear-ice machine drips but does not make ice. Built-in clear-ice makers need a clean water path, a working pump and an open drain. A clogged drain or failed pump stops production.
Frozen fill tube. A thin line of ice blocks the tube that feeds the mold. It often traces back to a valve that drips between cycles.
Ice Makers We Work On
- Refrigerator ice makers in the freezer section of top-mount, bottom-mount and side-by-side models.
- French-door ice makers mounted in the fresh-food compartment or in the door.
- Built-in undercounter ice makers, including clear-ice models in kitchens, bars and basements.
- Door dispensers — auger, motor, flap and switches.
- Add-on ice maker kits installed in an existing freezer.
Brands we service include Whirlpool, GE, Samsung, LG, KitchenAid, Maytag, Frigidaire, Electrolux, Bosch, Kenmore, Viking, Thermador, Sub-Zero and Miele. Alex Appliances Repair is an independent repair company and is not affiliated with any of these manufacturers; brand names are used only to identify the equipment we repair.
How We Find the Real Problem
Ice makers are easy to misjudge. A new ice maker module will not help if the water never reaches it, and a new valve will not help if the freezer runs at 15°F. Our technicians check the system end to end:
- Freezer temperature. Most ice makers need the freezer near 0°F to complete a cycle. If the freezer runs warm, the cooling problem comes first.
- Water supply. We check the shutoff valve, the supply line, the filter and the household water pressure.
- Inlet valve. We test the valve coil and watch how much water it lets through during a fill.
- Fill tube and mold. Ice in the tube, a cracked mold or a failed mold heater can all stall the harvest.
- Module, sensors and shutoff. We run a test cycle and check the control, the thermostat or sensor that signals "frozen" and the arm or optical sensor that signals "full".
- Dispenser parts. The auger motor, the door flap and its solenoid, and the switches on the dispenser paddle.
- Pump and drain on undercounter and clear-ice machines.
Once we know what failed, we explain it, along with what the repair involves. You decide whether to go ahead.

Is the Ice Maker Worth Repairing?
Usually. Inlet valves, fill tubes, modules, sensors and dispenser motors are all replaceable without touching the refrigerator's cooling system. On built-in undercounter machines, pumps, drains and cutter grids are serviceable parts as well.
Where we tell you plainly that a repair may not pay off: a very old add-on ice maker on an aging refrigerator, or an undercounter machine whose sealed system has failed. In those cases you get the facts and make the call.
Refrigerator Ice Maker or Undercounter Machine?
The two look similar from the outside but work very differently, and the repair follows the design.
A refrigerator ice maker borrows cold from the freezer. Water fills a mold, the freezer freezes it, a small heater loosens the cubes and a rake or a twisting tray drops them into the bin. If the freezer is warm, the ice maker cannot keep up, no matter how healthy its own parts are.
An undercounter ice machine has its own small cooling system. Many built-in models make clear ice by running water over a chilled plate, then a cutter grid slices the slab into cubes. They need a working pump, a clean water path and a drain that flows freely. Scale from hard water is one of their most common enemies.
Knowing which type you have tells us which parts to check first and which to bring.
Quick Checks Before You Call
- Look at the shutoff arm or switch. If it is up or off, the ice maker thinks the bin is full.
- Check the freezer temperature. If it reads above 5°F, the ice maker may not finish its cycle.
- Replace an old water filter. A clogged filter is one of the most common reasons for small cubes.
- Make sure the water valve behind the refrigerator is fully open.
- Empty and wash the bin if the ice clumps or smells, then let the ice maker refill.
- Wait a full day after any change. A new ice maker or a reset one can take up to 24 hours to drop the first batch.
Ice Maker Care Tips
- Change the refrigerator water filter on the schedule in your manual.
- Use ice regularly or empty the bin every couple of weeks so cubes stay fresh.
- Clean undercounter ice makers as the manufacturer recommends; scale from hard water builds up on the water path.
- Keep the freezer near 0°F.
- If the house water pressure seems weak at every faucet, have a plumber check it — ice makers are one of the first appliances to feel it.

Ice Maker Repair FAQ
01How long should it take an ice maker to make ice?
A working refrigerator ice maker usually produces a batch every couple of hours once the freezer is at temperature. After installation or a reset, the first ice can take up to 24 hours.
02Why are my ice cubes so small?
Not enough water is reaching the mold. A clogged filter, a weak inlet valve or low water pressure is the usual cause.
03Do you repair undercounter and clear-ice machines?
Yes. We repair built-in undercounter ice makers, including clear-ice models with pumps and drains.
04My dispenser makes noise but no ice comes out. What failed?
Often the ice in the bin has fused into a block that the auger cannot move, or the dispenser flap is stuck. Sometimes the auger motor has failed. We check which one it is.
05Is low water pressure my problem or the ice maker's?
Most refrigerator inlet valves need at least about 20 psi to fill the mold properly. If every faucet in the house feels weak, the pressure is the issue; if not, the valve or filter probably is.
06Can you repair the ice maker without replacing the refrigerator?
In almost every case, yes. Ice maker parts are replaced on their own.
07What warranty do you offer on ice maker repairs?
Up to 6 months on parts and labor for ice maker repairs, and up to 12 months when the ice maker is a Sub-Zero.
