A freezer full of meat, casseroles and summer berries is a lot of money sitting at 0°F. When ice cream turns soft or a wall of frost grows on the back panel, every hour counts. Alex Appliances Repair sends a technician to homes, rentals and offices across the Atlanta area to check the freezer properly, explain what went wrong and get it holding temperature again.

Stop the Thaw: What a Failing Freezer Looks Like

Freezers send warning signs long before they quit. These are the ones that bring most Atlanta callers to us:

  • Food is soft but not thawed. The freezer is running, just not reaching 0°F. Restricted airflow, a weak fan or a coil starting to frost over are common reasons.
  • Frost covers the back wall or the vents. In a frost-free freezer that should never happen. A defrost heater, defrost thermostat or control is usually behind it.
  • The freezer runs without stopping. A dirty condenser, a door that does not seal or a low refrigerant charge keeps the compressor working all day.
  • Ice crystals on everything inside. Warm, humid air is getting in: a torn gasket, a sagging door or a lid left ajar.
  • Water under or inside the unit. A clogged defrost drain sends melt water where it should not go and can refreeze into a sheet of ice on the floor of the cabinet.
  • Clicking, buzzing or a loud hum. A struggling start relay, a fan blade hitting ice or a worn fan motor.
  • The light and display work, but nothing cools. Power is reaching the freezer, so the problem sits in the cooling circuit or the control that runs it.
  • The chest freezer sweats on the outside. Some condensation in an Atlanta summer garage is normal, but heavy sweating can mean the hot-gas loop or the lid seal needs a look.

Freezers We Repair

  • Upright freezers — frost-free and manual-defrost.
  • Chest freezers in kitchens, basements and garages.
  • Freezer drawers in built-in kitchens.
  • Column freezers paired with column refrigerators.
  • The freezer section of your refrigerator — top-mount, bottom-mount, side-by-side and French-door.
  • Compact freezers in apartments, dorm-style rooms and offices.

We service freezers from Whirlpool, GE, Samsung, LG, KitchenAid, Maytag, Frigidaire, Electrolux, Amana, Kenmore, Bosch, Viking, Thermador, Sub-Zero and Miele, among others. Alex Appliances Repair is an independent company with no affiliation with these manufacturers. Brand names appear here only to show which freezers we work on.

How We Diagnose a Freezer

A freezer that will not freeze can have four or five possible causes that look identical from the front. Our technicians work through them in order:

Air temperature and run time. We measure the real temperature at several shelves and see how long the compressor runs between rests.

Heat rejection. The condenser coil and fan have to throw off the heat pulled from inside. A blocked coil, a fan that stalls or a freezer jammed against a wall can push the whole system past its limits — especially in a hot garage.

Airflow inside the cabinet. On frost-free models, an evaporator fan moves air across the cold coil. We check that the fan runs, that the coil is clear and that the vents are not packed with frost or food.

Defrost. If the coil is buried in ice, we test the heater, the thermostat or sensor that ends the cycle and the board or timer that starts it.

Sealed system and start circuit. We test the start relay and overload, then the compressor itself. If refrigerant is low, there is a leak, and our EPA 608 certified technicians can check where.

Door and seal. Gaskets, hinges, door alignment and the lid switch on chest freezers.

After the diagnosis, you get a plain explanation of what failed and what the repair involves. Nothing gets replaced until you agree.

Repair or Replace Your Freezer?

A freezer is a simple machine: a box, insulation, a sealed cooling loop and a few controls. Most failures land on the parts that are easy to swap — fans, defrost heaters, thermostats, relays, gaskets and boards. In those cases repair is the smart move.

We will tell you honestly when replacement makes more sense:

  • an older chest freezer with a leak in the coil built into the walls;
  • a failed compressor on a small, basic unit;
  • rust through the cabinet or a damaged liner that no longer seals.

Built-in freezer columns and drawers are a different story. Replacing them means a new unit plus refitting the cabinetry, and they are designed to be repaired for many years.

What to Do While You Wait

  • Keep the door or lid closed. A full freezer keeps food frozen for about 48 hours with the door shut; a half-full one, about 24 hours (USDA).
  • Group food together so it stays cold longer, and move the most valuable items into a cooler with ice.
  • Do not chip away frost with a knife or screwdriver. One slip can puncture the coil and turn a defrost repair into a sealed-system job.
  • Check the plug and the breaker. Garage outlets with a GFCI button trip more often than people expect.
  • Food that still has ice crystals or is at 40°F or below can be refrozen safely, according to the USDA.

Keep Your Freezer Running Longer

  • Vacuum the condenser coil once or twice a year.
  • Leave a few inches of space around the cabinet so it can breathe.
  • Keep the freezer reasonably full; frozen food holds the cold when the door opens.
  • On manual-defrost and chest freezers, defrost once frost gets thicker than about a quarter inch.
  • Wipe the gasket and check it with a dollar bill test: close the door on it, and if it pulls out easily, the seal is weak.
  • In a garage, choose a model rated for garage use; standard freezers can struggle in Georgia summer heat and winter cold.

Quick answers before you book

Freezer Repair FAQ

01My freezer is running but food is soft. What is wrong?

The most common causes are a frosted evaporator coil from a defrost failure, a stopped evaporator fan or a dirty condenser coil. Each one keeps the freezer running without reaching 0°F.

02What temperature should a freezer hold?

0°F. That is the temperature the USDA and FDA recommend for keeping frozen food safe.

03Is it safe to use a freezer in my garage?

Many freezers are not built for big swings in temperature. In a hot Atlanta summer, a garage can push a standard unit past its limits, and in a cold snap some models stop running properly. Check the manual for a garage rating.

04Can you fix a chest freezer in my garage?

Yes. We repair chest freezers, upright freezers, freezer drawers, column freezers and the freezer section of refrigerators.

05Can you fix a refrigerant leak?

Our EPA 608 certified technicians can find and assess leaks. Whether a sealed-system repair is worth it depends on the freezer's age and where the leak is; we tell you honestly.

06How long will my food last if the freezer stops?

About 48 hours for a full freezer and about 24 hours for a half-full one, as long as the door stays closed (USDA).

07What warranty covers the repair?

Up to 6 months on parts and labor for freezer repairs, and up to 12 months when the freezer is a Sub-Zero.
